Arizona

Lake Havasu
This planned city on the banks of artificial Lake Havasu isn't Arizona's most compulsory stop, but it can lay claim to London Bridge. Yes, that would be the original, gracefully arched structure that spanned the Thames from 1831 until 1967, when it was quite literally falling down (as predicted in the old nursery rhyme) and put up for sale. Bought and reassembled by the city's developer, it's now a very popular attraction. Day-trippers come by the busload to walk across it and soak up faux British heritage in the kitschy-quaint 'English Village' at its eastern end.

Sedona, Arizona

Surrounded by 1.8 million acres of national forest land, visitors have instant access to recreational activities. Trails for hiking and biking, along with bouncy jeep tracks, weave among the bristling forest of pinnacles, spires, buttes and domes. Yet, you're never far from the indulgences of town. Nestled amid striking red sandstone formations, Sedona's truly spectacular landscape has long attracted spiritual seekers, artists and healers. Many people believe that this area has a number of vortexes that radiate the earth's energy, and you'll find all sorts of alternative medicines and practices here, from rejuvenating bodywork to past-life workshops. But outdoorsy adventurers – and even die-hard skeptics and city slickers – have begun to see the light as well: there are some inimitable thrills to be had hiking, mountain biking and climbing amid these desert spires.
